    What You'll Do Here:

    Cengage's Strategic Program Management team is responsible for developing, overseeing and implementing strategic programs and projects that support our internal Global Technology Services (GTS) division's vision and goals. 

     

    The Strategic Program Manager is specifically focused on evolving and improving GTS performance in two critical areas; Project and Program Management, and Process Improvement. This individual proactively manages programs and initiatives, with the goal of meeting business commitments on time and on budget while maximizing efficiencies and minimizing risk.

     

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities

     

    Project/Program Management

    • Works with cross-functional teams to build and manage project and program documentation, including planning, work estimates, schedules and budgets; successfully delivering on commitments.
    • Provides leadership to project teams, ensuring that projects are delivered within standards, scope, budget and schedules as identified in the strategic planning process.
    • Works with other team members to share learning, mitigate technical dependencies, and maximize practice consistency between teams.
    • Provides high transparency with respect to projects and teams by actively identifying the reporting/information needs and facilitating a communication plan.
    • Manages project teams consisting of a variety of technical and non-technical members, both inside and outside of the organization (i.e. internal Cengage Learning employees, external vendors and consultants, and/or offshore resources).

    Process Improvement

    • Supports GTS management initiatives through research and investigation, consultation, management, support and implementation of improved processes that directly impact business outcomes.
    • Works directly with GTS leaders, business users, subject matter experts, and external providers to deliver strategic programs from early discovery and pre-planning through implementation.
    • Provides leadership for continuous improvement by identifying challenges, conducting gap analyses, making recommendations and implementing effectively.
    • Consults with teams to understand business problems to be solved by technical solution.
    • Provides continuous leadership, keeping momentum and focus within the team.
    • Identifies, tracks, and reports meaningful metrics that maintain a focus on achieving performance goals
    • Coordinates stakeholders to elicit, document, and track a shared and complete understanding of project/initiative requirements.
    • Supports all areas of the business by developing expertise and assisting through consultation, research and analysis.

    Skills You Will Need Here:

    Basic (Required)

    • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or computer information systems, or applicable technology-related experience.
    • 5 + years of recent professional experience in the IT or software development industry.
    • Proven success in a leadership role with responsibility for delivery of IT projects within either a technology services or software product company
    • Experience monitoring and managing partner resources to ensure critical business results are achieved.
    • Experience with structured project management practices including estimation, budgeting, resource allocation, scope management, change management, risk management, escalation.
    • Proven ability to understand and translate business drivers for technical solutions.
    • Proven, strong written and oral communication skills across all levels of an organization.
    • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple demands without missing deadlines.
    • Analytical and problem-solving skills for addressing challenges that arise.
    • Ability to communicate and seek support for complex procedures or diverse information.
    • Ability to provide quality service by appropriate follow-through, urgency and persistence.
    • Strong teambuilding skills and teamwork orientation; able to coach, mentor and lead by example.

     

    Preferred

    • 5+ years of leadership experience within a software development team.
    • Basic understanding of web, integration, and ability to apply these concepts to solve business problems.
    • Experience with publishing or learning technologies.
    • Experience managing vendor resources.
    • Experience with Agile or Kanban project management tools.
