    What You'll Do Here:

    As Director of Data Analytics at Cengage, you will lead our Business Data Strategy and BI team, including hiring, coaching and developing new associates who will excel in the delivery of BI and Data Analytics, using visualizations and new ways to interpret and use data to delivery useful insights that can help guide and inform Cengage’s business.  Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you will also play a key role in promoting a business-oriented culture and mindset that seeks to continual improve service, productivity and a positive experience for Data and BI users. In this role, you will guide the development of our Data strategy and roadmap, ensuring that they support company’s overall data strategic initiatives. 


    • Serve as system-wide leader for data and analytics. Working closely with our engineering leadership, product development, business development and sales teams. you will develop a comprehensive understanding of our overall business goals and data analytics needs.
    • Lead the analytics engineering team fostering good engineering practices such as agile, change management, continuous improvement, talent management, etc.
    • Direct the development of continuing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to assess current and future needs and use of analytical tools and data.
    • Work with internal teams as well as outside BI vendors to leverage solutions and dashboards for evidence-based decision making and enhanced self-service.
    • Oversee data unification and standardization initiatives.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to design, build, and test/iterate enterprise data frameworks, solutions and user-friendly visualization dashboards focused on key customer initiatives.
    • Serve as a thought leader educating Cengage data users on innovative new data analytics approaches and applications.
    • Be accountable for the delivery of all projects, programs and tactics relating to BI/Data Analytics.
    • Serve as the go-to person and subject matter expert for topics related to Data Warehouse, Data Governance, Descriptive & Predictive Analytics, Business Intelligence, Reporting/Dash boarding, Big Data and Machine Learning.
    • Lead by example, engaging hands-on for complex data challenges and Information Management projects that can help us derive deep insights from data.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to frame, structure and prioritize business problems where BI can have the greatest impact.
    • Drive the design, development and deployment of standardized metrics and dashboards to measure delivery across our organization.
    • Prioritize, expand, and manage our portfolio of data, analytics, and BI projects to support business requirements within agreed-upon time frames and budget constraints.
    • Attract, develop, and retain talent while improving overall team productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness.

    Skills You Will Need Here:

    Knowledge and Abilities:

    • Technical skills: SQL, ETL scripts, Tableau (or other BI tools), Adobe / Google Analytics
    •  Deep knowledge of BI / Analytics approaches, tools and visualization techniques, as well as cloud and data technologies
    • The ability to facilitate change successfully, drawing on past experiences to lead change effectively at scale.
    • Leadership skills and experience managing and coaching technology teams.
    • A client-focused mindset, with strong organizational and presentation skills.
    • Proven track record of delivering highly-scalable and reliable solutions through multiple cycles.
    • Excellent information management skills (architecture, design, development and support) in ETL, Database, DW, Reporting & Big Data is highly preferred.
    • Stakeholder management and engagement skills.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly the ability to synthesize complex issues/scenarios into easy-to-understand concepts through "storytelling".
    • Demonstrated ability to work in fast-changing and sometimes ambiguous situations to gain and assert influence across organizational boundaries.



    • 10+ years' of experience in a Data Analytics, Business Intelligence or Reporting role.
    • Experience working with large data sets and databases, with expertise defining, designing, integrating and analyzing data to draw meaningful conclusions with strategic implications.
    • Strong experience on at least 2-3 different technology stacks typically used for ETL, DW, Reporting & Big Data applications.
    • Experience with a variety of Analytics platforms, Visualization platforms and Programming languages



    • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field, such as engineering, data science, statistics, finance or economics.
    • Master's degree preferred.
