What You'll Do Here:

The Program Management Office (PMO) is the strategic execution arm of Cengage’s Global Product Technology organization.

 

This role will serve as the effective “chief of staff” to our Service Experience (SX) team by providing direct support to the SVP of SX and his direct reports.  This work includes management of that team’s major initiatives and helping to improve operational efficiencies.

 

This role will be high-visibility and will offer exciting challenges in problem solving, collaboration and communication, cross-team orchestration, and day-to-day team management and leadership.

 

The broader PMO team which you would be joining are the “grease” that drive our execution of strategic initiatives from ideation and initiation to market launch. We are the go-to people to ensure initiative teams are focused on the highest-value work.  We also make sure each initiative is organized, value is ultimately delivered, and all key stakeholders can tell a consistent story of initiative progress.

  

We are looking for a talented Program Manager to join our team.  Responsibilities include:

 

  • Oversee cross-functional organization-wide projects or initiatives for all phases of those initiatives (ideation, build, go-to-market, conclusion).
  • Track and forecast progress to completion of high priority initiatives for the executive team, identifying obstacles as they arise.
  • Communicate initiative status to the executive team, pulling in other executives or team members as necessary to help drive decisions.
  • Provide decision support through data gathering, information analysis, and presentation of considerations to relevant stakeholders.
  • Proactively flag (and/or solve!) roadblocks, dependencies, and tradeoffs.
  • Serve as an advisor and counsel to the executive’s (SVP’s) direct reports.
  • Identify the areas to which they must direct their focus and identify metrics for success, revisiting regularly and evaluating progress.

Skills You Will Need Here:

  • Approximately two to eight years of work experience in a relevant field. Potential fields are program or project management, management consulting, operations consulting and/or tech strategy or operations.
  • Proven ability to operate by influence (e.g. deliver large projects and programs successfully without having direct authority over all teams).
  • Tenacity and flexibility; ability to do whatever it takes to solve a problem, but also pivot and change direction based on input and feedback of others.
  • Exceptional relationship building skills; able to gain trust of diverse stakeholders from CTO to entry-level software engineer.
  • Ability to present with confidence to senior leadership.
  • Ability to understand and lead others through ambiguous situations.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, results-driven environment.
  • MBA or equivalent master's degree not required but preferred.
  • Knowledge of software development practices (e.g. Agile/Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) and tools (e.g. JIRA, Confluence) a plus.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of call center operations a plus.
  • Ability to manage a significant level of detail without losing sight of the big picture.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to synthesize the most critical insights from large amounts of information and develop logical storylines in PowerPoint.
  • Expert at running high-functioning meetings, including facilitating and mediating productive conversations, driving to decisions efficiently, and effectively balancing advocacy and inquiry.
