What You'll Do Here:

The Senior Accounting Manager and Controller acts as the Controller for Cengage Canada, and liases with other key accounting and finance teams across Cengage globally to ensure successful delivery of Accounting activities.This position manages key accounting processes and financial activities including monthly/quarterly/annual reporting, certain transactional processing, reconciliation review, system analysis, business analytics, metrics reporting, and ad-hoc analysis. In addition, this role ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), statutory guidelines and internal financial policies and procedures. 

With end to end ownership, this position digs into the details, utilizes all resources to gather information, and quickly solves problems. Strong analytical abilities, excellent management, organizational and communication skills, sense of accountability, high quality output and an ability to partner with others throughout the business is required to to accomplish the business goals and be successful in this role. 


  • Owns the overall month-end, quarter-end, and year end accounting processes for the Cengage Canada region, supporting multiple functional groups and associated accounting processes
  • Provides key accounting data and services to various groups within the Cengage organization, including journal creation/review, month end transaction creation/review, provisions/allowances/reserve calculations, other reconciliations, and reporting and analysis
  • Partners with shared services teams to ensure that finance operational activities are completed accurately and on time, and helps resolve issues (AP, AR, T&E, Payroll, etc.)
  • Partners with treasury to ensure appropriate banking structures, manages cash on hand, and creates regular cash forecasts
  • Partners with corporate tax team to ensure accurate and timely filings and provisioning for taxes, and meets all statutory tax compliance requirements, including Canadian corporate tax filings.
  • Oversees fixed asset management, including acquisition, recording, and disposal of WIP and fixed assets
  • Provides key support for Financial and Control audits, working directly with internal and external auditors
  • Performs monthly, quarterly and annual reporting and key reserve analysis
  • Calculates and reports timely and accurate financial data and operating metrics
  • Calculates variances from the plan and reports issues to management
  • Maintains a strong control environment to safeguard assets and ensure adequacy of processes/procedures
  • Performs continuous process improvements that enhance quality, productivity and systems
  • Administers policies on finance, accounting, budget and auditing to ensure compliance
  • Obtains and maintains a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure
  • Performs special projects and drive strategic initiatives
  • Performs other duties as needed to achieve department goals

Skills You Will Need Here:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance, CPA required
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in highly visible accounting roles with leadership capabilities
  • Strong knowledge of business hierarchies and general ledger accounts
  • Ability to collaborate and deliver presentations to executives
  • Excellent listening and communication skills with ability to build relationships across the company
  • Strong problem-solving, detail-orientation and analytical capabilities, along with the ability to identify exceptions and develop solutions
  • Ability to prioritize, work under deadline pressures and deliver high quality with end to end accountability
  • Demonstrate dedication, honesty, reliability and integrity at all times
  • Desire for learning and the flexibility to manage and drive change in current processes
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs and financial reporting and ERP accounting systems
